Privacy Policy

Last Updated: May 10, 2024

This Privacy Policy describes how KeyTakes™ collects, uses, and shares information about you when you use our Extension and Service.

1. Information We Collect

We collect information in the following ways:

  • Information Collected by the Extension:
    • Webpage Content (Upon User Action): When you activate the Extension (e.g., by clicking its icon), it accesses the URL, title, and textual content of the active webpage. This is necessary to provide the summarization service. The Extension uses technologies like Mozilla's Readability library to extract the main article text. This data is temporarily stored in your browser's local storage (`chrome.storage.local`) and then passed to the KeyTakes website when it opens to display the summary.
    • No Automatic Data Collection: The Extension does not automatically collect data in the background. It only accesses webpage content when you explicitly initiate its functionality.
  • Information Collected by the KeyTakes Service (Website & Backend):
    • User-Provided Content: When you use the KeyTakes website to input a URL or paste text directly for summarization, or when data is passed from the Extension, we collect that URL, title, or text.
    • Account Information: If you choose to create an account (e.g., for a Pro plan), we collect information such as your email address and password.
    • Payment Information: For Pro plan subscriptions, payment information is collected and processed by our third-party payment processor (LemonSqueezy). We do not directly store your full credit card details. We may receive transaction identifiers and subscription status from the payment processor.
    • Usage Data: To manage service limits and improve our service, we collect your IP address and a unique user identifier cookie (`kt_uid`) for anonymous users. For logged-in users, we track usage associated with your account. This helps us prevent abuse and understand general feature usage.
    • Cookies: We use essential cookies to maintain your session if you log in, remember your preferences (like theme), and for anonymous user identification for usage limits.
    • Server Log Data: Our servers automatically record standard information ("Log Data") when you access the Service. This Log Data typically includes your IP address and the specific pages or resources you request on our Service (e.g., `/api/summarize`). This information is essential for monitoring the health and security of our Service, troubleshooting issues, and preventing abuse. Information such as browser type or operating system might be included in these logs by our hosting provider (Vercel) as part of standard web server operations, but we do not actively use this specific browser/OS data for tracking or profiling.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide, maintain, and improve the Extension and Service, including generating summaries and Q&A responses.
  • Process transactions and manage subscriptions for Pro plan users (if applicable).
  • Communicate with you if you contact us or if you have an account (e.g., for service-related announcements).
  • Monitor and analyze general trends and usage to improve our Service.
  • Prevent abuse, enforce our terms, and protect the security and integrity of our Service (e.g., through rate limiting via Upstash).
  • Remember your preferences (like theme settings).

3. How We Share Your Information

We do not sell your personal information. We may share your information in the following limited circumstances:

  • With Third-Party Service Providers:
    • AI Model Providers (e.g., Google Gemini): The webpage content or text you submit for summarization or Q&A is sent to third-party AI model providers to generate the results. These providers have their own privacy policies.
    • Search Engine Providers (e.g., Google Custom Search): If you use KeyTakes by modifying a URL path on our website (e.g., `keytakes.com/path/to/article`), we may use a search service to find the original URL. The Extension itself does not directly use this.
    • Payment Processors (e.g., LemonSqueezy): To process payments for Pro subscriptions if you choose to subscribe.
    • Hosting and Infrastructure Providers (e.g., Vercel, Firebase): To host our website, database (for accounts and cached summaries), and backend services.
    • Rate Limiting Services (e.g., Upstash Redis): To prevent abuse and ensure fair usage of our services.

We select these providers carefully and they are authorized to use your information only as necessary to provide these services to us.

  • For Legal Reasons: We may disclose your information if required to do so by law or in response to valid requests by public authorities (e.g., a court or a government agency).
  • Business Transfers: If KeyTakes™ is involved in a merger, acquisition, or asset sale, your personal information may be transferred.

4. Data Security

We take reasonable measures to help protect information about you from loss, theft, misuse, and unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, and destruction. However, no internet or email transmission is ever fully secure or error-free.

5. Data Retention

We retain personal data for as long as necessary to provide the Service, comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements. Summaries generated from public URLs may be cached for up to 3 months to improve performance and reduce costs; these cached summaries are accessible via public "social URLs". Data stored in `chrome.storage.local` by the Extension is temporary and cleared after being passed to the KeyTakes website. Account information is retained as long as your account is active or as needed to provide you services.

6. Your Rights and Choices

Depending on your location, you may have certain rights regarding your personal information, such as the right to access, correct, or delete your data. If you have an account, you can manage some of your information through your account settings. For other requests, please contact us at mjaschmidtfw@gmail.com.

7. Children's Privacy

Our Service is not directed to individuals under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, we will take steps to delete such information.

8. International Data Transfers

Your information, including personal data, may be transferred to — and maintained on — computers located outside of your state, province, country, or other governmental jurisdiction where the data protection laws may differ from those in your jurisdiction. Your consent to this Privacy Policy followed by your submission of such information represents your agreement to that transfer.

9. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last Updated" date. You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes.
